Alan Lee is a Brit. from Middlsex and attended the Ealing School of Art. He is perhaps one of the best known ‘Tolkien illustrators’ designing the cover and textual illustrations for the centennial edition (1991) of LotRings; the 1995 edition of The Hobbit, and the first edition of Narn i Chîn Húrin: the tale of the children of Húrin (2007) among dozens of other illustrated fantasy books. He works mainly in water colours which lends his work a dreamy ‘other world’ quality like Michael hague’s illustrations of The Hobbit. With John Howe, he was hired by Peter Jackson and brought down to New Zealand to consult on the films.
